Gloria and Gerard at a breakfast meetingTHERE IS NO JOY in conveying the melancholy news that my esteemed companion and editorial compatriot, Gloria Grant (nee Nonmus), gently passed away in the early hours of Monday 24 January 2011 in Brisbane, having been ill over Christmas. This came as a tremendous shock to many people, but fortunately, her family were with her every step of the way.

She was farewelled from the Merthyr Road Uniting Church, 52 Merthyr Road, New Farm in Brisbane, on Saturday, 29th January.

Ever mindful of historical significance, Gloria would be the first to point out that while her feet may have carried her tens of thousands of miles and taken her to dozens of countries, her public send-off took place only 496 yards from the spot where she was born 81 years ago, in 1929. She will be sadly missed especially by her three children, their spouses, and her six grand-children – and of course by me, since we worked closely together for many decades on countless projects and several books.

As her elder daughter put it poignantly, “It’s as if Mum’s only on holiday, and she’ll just come back around the corner, any moment now…”

Fare thee well, Gloria…
